EVENTS! And More
By Drew Doebelin
Last week we finished up all the boards for our three events that happened on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I was able to help out with some of the firefighter displays, the country store board, and Baumgartner Quarry board. I glued a lot of things!

The 9/11 event with Westminster went very well, I thought it was very well done and I loved getting to work with so many hard workers dedicated to memorializing and honoring the victims and first responders of 9/11.

The Slice of Callaway event also went great! Luckily the weather was so nice and we had some good breezes. Getting to see the tobacco barn at the Baumgartner farm up close was interesting too, they had displayed a lot of tools that would be used on the farm.

When we got to the pie eating I was definitely ready to sit down, and Rose Yoder’s pies were delicious (I had a pecan slice, my mom had blackberry and my dad had the cherry.) I’ve also never been to an auction, so it was really awesome to see how lighthearted and fun it was. My parents bid on Haley’s Kentucky Bourbon Pie and we got it, it was amazing (It was fully eaten by Monday night)!

I’ve also expanded my research for the Callaway Civil War Black soldiers (Formerly only U.S.C.T members) to now include Navy members! One thing I didn’t know before I started was that the Navy was integrated during that time and had Black and White sailors on the same registers. It will take a while to get through since I need to find all the ships that Callawegians would have been on, but I’m super excited to add them to the list!
