My First Few Weeks as an Intern!

It has been a wonderful two months since I started my internship/volunteering with KCHS, and I have had a blast getting to meet all the volunteers and people that make our Historical Society work! The first week I joined had the KCHS Annual Meeting, which I helped make a display board showing the progression of the Museum restoration and I got to draw the winner for the quilt raffle!

I also sat in on two sessions of the Life Long Learning program, “Quilt Barns and Paint Brushes” with Margot McMillen and “Indigenous Missourians, Ancient Societies to the Present” with Greg Olsen. I’ve had the chance to meet a lot of awesome people who I wouldn’t have had the chance to meet otherwise, so I feel very grateful to experience these events!

Throughout the past few weeks I have been helping make accession forms and application forms fillable online, scanned some newspapers for digital access, and transcribed documents, which included a few pensions of soldiers for our America 250 scavenger hunt! My favorite activity so far has been on clear weather days, where I get to clean items from the museum! I have been working a bit on the saddles and Gidley, who is now looking extra cute and mold free! I also have helped paint and apply clear coats to some tables/surfaces so they can’t hold unwanted moisture.

I’ve gotten to learn so much in just a few months, both about Callaway County and historical preservation, and I am so excited to help out more around the society!
